Germany’s new Chancellor Olaf Soltz has threatened with possible “consequences” for the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline connecting Russia to Germany in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Our position is very clear, we want the inviolability of the border to be respected by all,” he said, when asked if the pipeline could be used to put pressure on Russia. “Everyone understands that there will be consequences if this does not happen, but the point is to do everything we can to ensure that (the borders) remain inviolable,” he said in an interview with Welt television.
Earlier in the day, France, after the United States, warned Russia that it would suffer “strategic and massive consequences” if it attacked Ukraine.
Western countries and Kiev accuse Moscow of gathering tens of thousands of troops and tanks at the border in anticipation of an invasion, which Moscow denies.
The White House did not specify whether US President Joe Biden, in a video call he had yesterday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, threatened Moscow with sanctions in the energy sector.
