Germany and the European Union will impose further sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin invades Ukraine, a possibility that cannot be ruled out, German Chancellor Olaf Soltz warned on Tuesday.
Solz stressed that Russia’s recognition of the independence of the two breakaway regions of Lugansk and Donetsk is not in line with international law and endangers Ukraine’s sovereignty, according to Reuters.
“We can not accept this,” Soltz was quoted as saying by German television network RTL, adding that respect for borders was an important factor in peace in Europe.
“If everyone in Europe starts flipping through the history books about where the borders once were, then we are facing a very worrying period,” he added.
