German Chancellor Olaf Solz said on Wednesday he welcomed any interest shown by Finland in joining NATO, an issue that has become more urgent since Russia invaded Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine has sparked a public debate in neutral Finland, which shares a long land border with Russia, over whether to join the US-led NATO alliance.
Asked at a press conference with the Finnish Prime Minister if Germany would support Finland if it decided to join the defense alliance, Solz said there was already co-operation between Finland and NATO.
Finnish Prime Minister Sana Marin said her country was reconsidering the issue, a move announced earlier this month. “Finland is likely to consider joining NATO,” Marin said.
