Somalia: At least 19 dead and 23 injured in bomb attacks

At least 19 people died and 23 others were injured in bomb attacks that took place today in two cities in southern Somalia, as the authorities of the African country announced.

In the city of Marka, a suicide bomber detonated his belted explosives, killing 13 people and injuring five others. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

A district official later confirmed that six people were killed and 18 others wounded in a twin bombing in the town of Afgoge, a few kilometers away. He said two landmines were detonated minutes apart in a busy market, pointing out that the second blast was intended to cause bloodshed during the ongoing rescue operation. Afkoge is visited every Wednesday by a large number of breeders to buy animals.

Al-Shabaab fighters have stepped up their attacks in recent months as government forces struggle to locate and destroy cells of the jihadist organization in various parts of Somalia.
