The continuing drought in Somalia has forced 805,000 people to flee their homes by the end of May, the United Nations has warned.
In May alone, more than 33,000 people were displaced by the drought, a 28 percent increase from April, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Somalia said on Sunday.
Displacement of Somalis due to drought began in January 2021.
Somalia and other parts of the Horn of Africa are suffering from the worst droughts in decades, with precipitation weakening in four consecutive rainy seasons.
Aid agencies have been warning for months against the risk of starvation. At least 6 million of the country’s 16 million people are at risk of starvation, according to government figures.
Somalia is also facing waves of violence by the jihadist group Shebab. Shebab, which controls vast areas in the south and center of the country, frequently attacks security forces and civilians.
