Something is wrong… NASA scientists arrested for protesting climate change

Last week, thousands of scientists from around the world took to the streets to protest. The reason? They demand to be heard about the realities of climate change, since the consequences of the way the planet has been treated are closer than we thought.

The protests erupted after the new report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, for its acronym in English), which warns that if an environmental catastrophe is to be avoided, we must act soon. According to this report, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced dramatically by 2025.

Unfortunately, the world is still powered by hydrocarbons and burning them is one of the main sources of emissions, which, according to that report, must be substantially reduced if we want to save our planet.

In California, as part of the protests, a group of scientists tied themselves to the door of a building belonging to the American financial giant JP Morgan Chase. This company is one of the main financiers of fossil fuels in the world and in a period of six years it invested 382 billion dollars in this business.

There is currently a video (the one we show you above) in which a scientist named Peter Kalmus explains the reasons why he and thousands of scientists are protesting. Kalmus works at NASA studying how the Earth is changing, focusing on extreme weather and biodiversity, so he has seen firsthand how the planet has been affected.

I am here because scientists are not listened to. I am willing to risk myself for this beautiful planet. It is time for all of us to stand up, take risks and make sacrifices for this planet that gives us life, that gives us everything.

Due to his actions, Peter and other colleagues who accompanied him in his protest were arrested. In Spain, scientists who protested were also arrested after painting Congress with fake blood.

They seek to create awareness

Peter and all the scientists who came out to protest are part of a very large group calling themselves Scientists Rebellion, whose goal is to inform the public about the realities of climate change and force the world’s governments to do something about it, that the plans that exist today are “grossly inadequate” and, as if that were not enough, they are not even carried out to the letter.

Tired of being ignored for decades or hearing that what’s coming isn’t really that bad, they hope their protests will “highlight the urgency and injustice of the climate and ecological crisis.”

What is being done about it?

Although the actions to avoid the environmental crisis we are heading towards are not enough, there are governments that do their part. For example, a couple of days ago, the Quebec government became the first in the world to ban oil exploration on its territory. In addition, in a period of three years, all the oil exploration and exploitation sites in this place will be closed.

The lack of seriousness with which the world seems to take these warnings has made many Internet users remember how disaster movies always start with a scientist being ignored. Tape don’t look up, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, touches on this very clearly. Although, of course, the consequences of inaction are even clearer.
