Sony Alpha 1 full frame mirrorless camera can shoot 8K video at 30 fps

Sony has unveiled the Alpha 1 full-frame camera. According to the manufacturer, it is “the most technologically advanced and innovative model” in its range. Against the background of competing models, the novelty stands out for its burst shooting and video shooting capabilities.

The camera uses a 50.1 megapixel Exmor RS image sensor. It is a back-illuminated CMOS sensor that is supplemented with built-in memory using 3D layout technology. Combined with the improved BIONZ XR image processor, this enables continuous shooting at 30 fps. The burst length when saved in RAW format with compression is 155 shots, in the JPEG format – 165. The camera performs up to 120 tracking focus and exposure calculations every second, and the image in the electronic viewfinder does not darken. By the way, the viewfinder uses a 9.4 million-dot OLED panel with a refresh rate of 240 fps.

The new camera is the first in the Alpha family to shoot 8K video with 10-bit color, 4: 2: 0 downsampling at 30 fps, and 4K video with 10-bit color, 4: 2: 2 downsampling and 120 fps. On the subject of video, the manufacturer notes the S-Cinetone color rendering technology, known from the FX9 and FX6 cinema cameras, for “expressive cinematic images.” The developers paid attention to cooling the image sensor and processor. Thanks to this, 8K video at 30 fps can be shot continuously for about 30 minutes.

The sync speed when shooting with an electronic shutter is 1/200 s, with a mechanical shutter – 1/400 s, which is the lowest value of this parameter among serial cameras.

According to the manufacturer’s estimates, the dynamic range for still photography reaches 15 stops of exposure, and for video recording – more than 15. The range of light sensitivity, extending from ISO 100 to ISO 32,000, can be extended to ISO 50-102,400 in photography mode.

Five degrees of freedom image stabilization system allows you to win up to 5.5 stops of exposure. The updated Pixel Shift Shooting mode delivers 17,280 x 11,520-pixel images by stitching up to 16 full-frame shifted images on a computer.

Other benefits include an improved human and animal eye AF function that now works for birds as well. In total, the focusing system includes 759 phase-detection AF sensors, covering about 92% of the frame.

The camera is equipped with a 3-inch movable display and digital audio interface, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB 3.2 Gen2 (10 Gb / s), Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI. By the way, you can output RAW video with 16-bit color to an external recorder via HDMI. The equipment also includes two slots for SDXC / SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards. In addition, CFexpress Type A memory cards are supported. The camera body is made of magnesium alloy.

The NP-FZ100 can take 563 shots on a single charge. The optional VG-C4EM Battery Grip can be used with the camera. With dimensions of 129 x 97 x 70 mm, the camera with a battery weighs 737 g. It supports power and USB charging.

The camera is priced at $ 6,500. It is expected to be on sale in March.
