Sony announced the creation of an artificial intelligence agent called Gran Turismo Sophy (GT Sophy), which was able to defeat the best racers in the world in the racing simulator Gran Turismo for PlayStation.
To get GT Sophy ready for the game, various divisions at Sony have brought together AI fundamental research, a hyper-realistic racing simulator, and a massive AI training infrastructure.
The AI raced for the first time against the top four Gran Turismo drivers in July, learned from the race, and bested human pilots in another race in October.
“It took about 20 PlayStations running simultaneously for 10-12 days to train the GT Sophy to race from zero to superhuman levels,” said Peter Wurman, director of Sony AI America and leader of the team that developed the AI.
The challenge in building an agent to drive a racing car, as opposed to AI beating humans at chess, mahjong and go, Sony says, is that there are a lot of decisions to be made in real time.
The racing simulator Gran Turismo was released in 1997. Since then, more than 80 million copies of the game have been sold.
Sony wants to apply what they’ve learned to other PlayStation games.
“There are a lot of games out there that pose different challenges to AI, and we look forward to starting work on those challenges,” Wurman said.
