Sony has finally unveiled its answer to Xbox Game Pass. This is the same subscription service that has appeared in leaks in recent months under the code name Spartacus.
True, this name has remained a code name. Sony decided not to abandon the name PlayStation Plus already known to gamers, so it introduced a completely new PlayStation Plus.
The service will be launched in June. Despite retaining the name, all of the major subscription rumors and leaks have proven to be true. In particular, gamers will receive three tariff plans: Essential, Extra and Premium.
PS Plus Essential is PS Plus in its traditional form. That is, at least two free games every month, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saved games and access to online.
PS Plus Extra includes the Essential plan and also adds a catalog of approximately 400 PS4 and PS5 games, including titles from internal PlayStation studios! Yes, Sony will still give access to its exclusives (or former exclusives) as part of a new subscription. The company is even more specific: Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal will be available at launch. It is also important that all these games can be downloaded to the console.
The older PS Plus Premium plan offers everything from the previous two, plus adds around 340 PS/PS2/PS3 games. Projects for PS3 are launched through the cloud service (PS Now), and older games are available both from the cloud and with the ability to download them to the console. The plan also offers cloud streaming access to original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 titles offered as Extra and Premium tiers in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles as well as PC.
This tier will also offer time-limited game trials for gamers to try before they buy.
Sony notes that due to the scale of the task, it will launch the service in stages in different countries. In June, the new PS Plus will be available in select Asian countries, and only then in the US, Europe and the rest of the world, where PS Plus is now available. But from the looks of things, the launch will still be quick, as the company says it will aim to launch the new PS Plus in all available markets by the end of June.
Now about the prices:
- PS Plus Essential – $10 a month or $60 a year in the US and respectively 9 or 60 euros in Europe
- PS Plus Extra – $ 15 per month or $ 100 per year in the US and respectively 14 or 100 euros in Europe
- PS Plus Premium – $18 a month or $120 a year in the US and respectively 17 or 120 euros in Europe
