Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens introduced

As expected, Sony has announced the release of the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G full-frame lens, which was previewed some time ago. According to the manufacturer, this motorized zoom is designed for “hybrid-type creators who shoot both photos and videos,” but with an emphasis on ease of use for video shooting.

Motorized zoom means that the focal length is changed using a motor installed in the lens. More specifically, the zoom, like the auto focus, is handled by linear motors, which Sony calls Extreme Dynamic (XD) motors. There are six of them: two are used for focusing, four for zooming.

The zoom can be controlled using the ring, the two-position lever, and (on compatible cameras) the lever near the shutter button. The control is proportional, that is, the rate of change of the focal length depends on how strongly the lever is deviated from the middle position. The zoom speed can be set separately for framing and shooting, for example, so that you can quickly compose a shot and smoothly zoom in or out while shooting. The advantages of the lens include a constant maximum aperture over the entire range of focal lengths, small size and weight. The lens is protected from dust and moisture. The front element has a fluorine coating to prevent contamination.
