Sony has finally released firmware for the PlayStation 5 that allows the use of an optional SSD. The slot for it was provided initially, but at the software level the opportunity was not realized – until now. True, and now it only works in the beta version of the console firmware.
The PlayStation 5 is available with M.2 SSDs ranging from 250GB to 4TB for more gaming space. M.2 types 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 with Socket 3 (Key M) are supported. It is important that the drive has an effective cooling system – in the form of a radiator. The maximum dimensions of a compatible SSD, taking into account the cooling system, are 110 x 22 x 11.25 mm.
Sony does not guarantee the operation and compatibility of all SSDs with the PlayStation 5, but a number of drives have already been tested for compliance. Among them: Seagate FireCuda 530, Western Digital SN850 Black, Samsung 980 Pro (you will have to install the radiator yourself), Aorus NVMe Gen 4 7000S (the radiator is slightly higher than it should be, but this does not interfere with work), Patriot Viper VP4300, Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus, Corsair MP600 Pro (original 15mm heatsink will have to be replaced with a low-profile one).
