Sony is going to bring sports to the metaverse

The Japanese tech giant has acquired the animation company Beyond Sports, which owns the technology to transform the image of a sports match into 3D objects within the metaverse.

The deal is valued at about $70 million. Sony plans to merge the achievements of Beyond Sports and another company acquired back in 2011, Hawk-Eye Innovations. Objective: to create a technology that would allow real-time production of content related to football, basketball, tennis and baseball competitions. Hawk-Eye Innovations has invented a way to accurately determine the position of the ball at any time – already used by, for example, the National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL).

If Sony succeeds, it will be able to reproduce an accurate real-time match simulation in 3D, in which the players and the ball will move realistically. And integrate it into the metaverse – that is, sports fans will be able to attend an almost real match without leaving their homes.

The company is currently developing its own virtual reality headset Playstation VR 2, which is scheduled for release in February 2023. The headset will only be compatible with the company’s own gaming console, the Playstation.

Previously, the Sony gaming division received a patent that will allow the study and use of non-fungible tokens in their products.
