Sony is preparing a redesign of the PlayStation 5 with a new processor

The rumor was originally prompted by a direct statement from Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki. During a recent conference call with investors about the year’s financial results, the executive revealed that Sony is considering tackling the PS5 shortage by redesigning the console. He did not give additional details, but information on this matter began to appear on the network.

Suppliers will begin production of the redesigned console between the second and third quarters of 2022, as Taiwanese resource Digitimes, known for its links to the production chain, has now reported. It is noted that the “redesign” will consist in a new processor – a modified 6-nanometer chip from AMD. It also emphasizes that the new CPU will be cheaper than the one currently used in the PS5.

The current version of the PlayStation 5 is equipped with a modified AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation based on the 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture, with a frequency of 3.5 GHz, 8 cores and 16 threads.
