According to Bloomberg, a class action lawsuit was filed against Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, the signatories accusing the company of exercising an illegal monopoly by forcing them to buy digital versions of PlayStation games only from their store.
In a class action lawsuit examined by Bloomberg, users allege that Sony barred other companies, including Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Walmart, two years ago from selling download codes for games for PlayStation consoles. As a result, the Sony PlayStation Store remains the only place to purchase digital versions of the PlayStation.
The lawsuit states that “Sony’s monopoly allows it to set ultra-competitive prices for digital copies of PlayStation games, which are significantly higher than physical copies sold in the competitive retail market.” As a result, users pay 175% more for the digital version than for the same games on disc.
Sony has not yet made an official comment. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, San Francisco.
