Sony World Photography: here are the ten category winners. The photos

The World Photography Organization has announced the category winners and selected in the Open competition of the Sony World Photography Awards 2022, which reward the best shots of 2021. Also this year Italy is present and is awarded for the Portrait category with the shot made by the photographer Simone Corallini: The Endless Summer – Surf Trip (The endless summer – surf trip). A black and white portrait of sixteen-year-old surfer Simone Gentile, as he comes out of the sea, with drops of water sliding down his cheeks.

In this year’s Open competition more than 170 thousand images and more than 100 photographers have been selected in addition to the ten category winners. Each winner receives digital imaging equipment from Sony and competes for the prestigious title Open Photographer of the Year and for the $ 5,000 prize.

“I enjoyed evaluating this wide variety of categories from Objects to Street Photography,” he commented Hideko Kataoka, judge of this year’s Open competition and director of photography for Newsweek Japan. «Creativity and originality were important elements in choosing the winning image and it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and joy of the photographers in capturing the moment. As seen in many selected images this year, black and white photography plays a special role for many photographers. Black and white in its simplicity has the power to synthesize the content of an image and direct the viewer’s attention to the subject ».

The overall winners of the Open, Professional, Student and Youth competitions will be announced on 12 April and the selected works of the winners and finalists will be exhibited in the context of the Sony World Photography Awards at Somerset House, London, from 13 April to 2 May 2022.
