Yesterday, Google decided to honor with a doodle to the Olympic medalist Soraya Jiménez, who was born on August 5, 1977, commemorating what would be her 44th birthday on the cover of the famous search engine.
The talented weightlifter was one of the most popular in Mexico after she won the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, becoming the first Mexican woman to win the gold medal in weightlifting competition.
Soraya was born in Naucalpan, State of Mexico and since she was a child she showed interest in different sports such as basketball, tennis and swimming. But it wasn’t until he was 16 that he managed to win third place in weightlifting in Colorado Springs, USA.
Later and at the age of 21, the athlete was approved by the International Olympic Committee to participate in the women’s weightlifting team at the Olympic Games, for which in 1998 she won silver medals at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada.
Soraya’s career reached its highest point when on September 18, 2000, she managed to lift a cumulative total of 222.5 kilos, surpassing Ri Song Hui, from the North Korean committee, and becoming the first Mexican woman to win a medal of gold at the Olympics and the first to win first place since the 1984 Los Angeles games.
After some scandals and health problems, Soraya decided to retire and focused on her work as a weightlifting teacher. Unfortunately, on March 28, 2013, one of Mexico’s great athletes died at the age of 35 due to an acute myocardial infarction.
Regardless of her history, Soraya Jiménez’s achievement gave hope to the hundreds of Mexican athletes who have represented our country during the last 20 years and have done their best in each of their specialties to bring more medals to Mexico.
