Sores could be like chickenpox or something else, says monkeypox patient

The first Brazilian diagnosed with monkeypox spoke was discharged on Monday (20). Anderson Ribeiro spoke to CNN about the main symptoms that appeared and how they were treated.

“These are holidays that could be chickenpox, could be anything else,” he said. Anderson said this happened because he “didn’t know about the disease”.

He also said that he had all the symptoms already disclosed. “Fever, headache, a lot of pain in the body, with the feeling that the body is broken,” he explained.

In addition, the patient says he has “secondary lesions” as a result of the disease.

“Some smallpox lesions have generated secondary lesions, mainly in the mucosa,” he said.

The first infection was reported on June 8 and the patient was isolated at Hospital Emílio Ribas, in the West Zone of São Paulo.

Anderson said that there was no specific treatment, but that it avoided pain. “[Doença] was treated with antibiotics and analgesics. There is no specific treatment, you have to wait the time of 14 days and 14 more now at home,” she reported.

So far, Brazil has eight confirmed cases of the disease. Monkeypox virus is transmitted from person to person through close contact with injuries, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding.

The incubation period is usually 6 to 13 days, but can range from 5 to 21 days.
