SOS by Covid-19 National Response Committee: Declaring Yemen a State of Emergency

Its proclamation Yemen The Covid-19 National Response Committee is calling for a “state of emergency”, stressing that the government of the war-torn country must impose a partial curfew.

Yemen has seen about 100 new cases of coronavirus per day in recent days, most since the beginning of the pandemic.

Experts, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency, estimate that the real numbers are much higher, as no diagnostic tests are available and the health system is on the verge of collapse.

In a Twitter post, the Covid-19 National Response Committee called on “the Ministry of Public Health and Population to declare a state of emergency in all provinces, step up hospital preparedness and provide personal protective equipment to health workers.”

This announcement is made “in view of the possibility of a second wave” pandemic.

The commission also called for a “partial curfew”, depending on the health situation in the various areas.

At the same time, he appealed to the competent ministries to close the wedding halls and mosques, with the exception of prayer hours, as well as to give permission to the elderly civil servants or to those who suffer from chronic diseases.

The commission refers to the internationally recognized government of Yemen, which, however, does not control the whole country.

The Houthi Shiite rebels control most of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.

The Houthis do not disclose the number of covid-19 cases recorded in the areas they control.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, NGOs have warned that the health crisis could turn into a catastrophe and exacerbate the humanitarian disaster already unfolding in Yemen, which the UN has described as the worst in the world.

The country of about 30 million people has officially recorded about 3,500 cases coronavirus and 771 deaths.
