The United States plans to provide Ukraine with an advanced “medium and long-range” surface-to-air missile system, a source familiar with the case said today.
“It is possible that the United States will announce the purchase of a NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) system for Ukraine this week,” the source said.
The NASAMS surface-to-air missile system, which is considered to be highly improved, is manufactured by the American Raytheon and the Norwegian Kongsberg Group.
The source clarified that Washington is also expected to make public the delivery to the Ukrainian forces and other equipment, mainly ammunition for artillery and radar.
The United States has modified its arms deliveries to Ukraine in recent weeks, in the wake of a conflict that is now concentrated in the eastern part of the country and is more static, in which artillery plays a dominant role.
Washington has mainly begun supplying the Himars High Mobility Artillery Rocket System with a range of 80 kilometers to Ukraine.
Ukraine has called on its allies to “match fire” with Russian forces after withdrawing its troops from Sheverodonetsk, a strategic town in the Donbass region that has been pounded by Russian artillery in recent weeks.
