Sources: Iran and Europeans maintain nuclear negotiations and agree with more

Diplomats from Iran and the three European parts remaining in the 2015 nuclear agreement met in Istanbul on Friday (16), Iranian and British authorities said in the first round of negotiations since the US began nuclear negotiations with Tehran in April.

Conversations between senior diplomats of Iran and the United Kingdom, France and Germany – known as E3 – occurred while US President Donald Trump pressures a deal to limit the Iranian nuclear program. Also this Friday, he asked Iran to act quickly after saying that his government had submitted a proposal to Iran.

An Iranian source close to the negotiating team said Tehran has not received the American proposal, “but Oman received it and will deliver it to Tehran soon.”

The European powers do not participate in current negotiations between Iran and the United States, whose fourth round ended in Oman on Sunday (11). A new round has not yet been scheduled.

However, they kept repeated conversations with the Iranians, more recently in March, where they discussed how they saw the parameters of an agreement to replace 2015.

The three powers sought to coordinate with Washington, especially about whether and when they should repay the sanctions of the United Nations (UN) against Tehran – known in diplomatic circles such as “recovery mechanism” – if no agreement is reached.

This coordination has not been easy, with European diplomats lamenting the lack of clarity in US politics in their negotiations with Tehran.

Iran and the Europeans agreed to keep new conversations if necessary, said Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

“Iran and the three European countries are determined to maintain and optimize the use of diplomacy,” said Gharibabadi. “We will meet again to continue the discussions if necessary.”

British diplomat Christian Turner told channel X that Iran and E3 share their commitment to dialogue and agreed to meet again without setting a deadline.

According to the Terms of a UN resolution that ratifies the 2015 nuclear pact, the three European powers have until October 18 to trigger the judicial recovery mechanism before the resolution exhausts.

According to diplomats and a document seen by Reuters, E3 countries can do this until August, if no substantial agreement is reached so far.

Relations between E3 and Iran have worsened last year, despite sporadic meetings, in a context of new sanctions imposed on Tehran by their ballistic missile program, the detention of foreign citizens and the support for Russia in their war against Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the equivalent of National E3 Powers, also in Istanbul, to discuss Iran and Ukraine, an American authority said.
