Sources: Trump wants to revoke legal status of Ukrainians who fled to the USA

The government of US President Donald Trump is planning to revoke the temporary legal status of about 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia, according to a senior administration authority and three sources familiar with the subject heard by the report

The measure places this group in a potentially fast path to deportation.

The measure, expected for April, would be a surprising reversal of the welcome that Ukrainians received during the government of President Joe Biden.

The planned change of protections to the Ukrainians was underway even before Trump publicly fought with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. This is part of the republican’s broader effort to remove legal status of more than 1.8 million immigrants authorized to enter the US through temporary humanitarian parking programs launched during the Biden government, the sources said.

US Department of Internal Security Department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said the department had no advertisements at the moment. The White House and the Ukraine embassy did not respond to requests for comments.

A Trump decree issued on January 20 requested that the internal security department “ended all categorical parole programs.”

The government plans to revoke the parole of about 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguns and Venezuelans this month, the sources said, requesting anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Immigrants who lose their conditional freedom status can face accelerated deportation processes, according to an internal email from the US immigration and customs agency seen by Reuters.

Immigrants who illegally cross the border can be placed in an accelerated deportation process known as accelerated removal for two years after entry. But for those who have entered legal entrance doors without officially “admitted” in the US – like those on parole – there is no time limit for rapid removal, according to the email.

Biden’s programs were part of a broader effort to create temporary legal paths to prevent illegal immigration and provide humanitarian aid.

In addition to the 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the Russian invasion and the 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguns and Venezuelans, these programs include more than 70,000 Afghanist Afghanistas.
