South Africa and Chad have announced that they will recall diplomats from Israel for “consultation” in response to the war in the Middle East.
“The South African government has decided to withdraw all its diplomats in Tel Aviv for consultation,” said Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni this Monday (6).
The South African government told CNN that there are three diplomats in Israel who will be recalled.
“The Cabinet also noted the Israeli ambassador to South Africa’s continued derogatory comments about those who oppose the Israeli government’s atrocities and genocide,” Ntshavheni stated, adding that the ambassador’s role “is becoming very untenable.”
“A genocide under the watch of the international community cannot be tolerated,” said Ntshavheni.
Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, Eliav Belotserkovsky, has been a regular presence in the South African media in recent weeks.
In March, South Africa’s parliament passed a resolution to lessen its ties with Israel. The South African government was also strongly formulaic in its condemnation of Israel’s operations in Gaza.
“It is a war crime for Israel to directly attack Palestinian civilians in hospitals, ambulances, schools, buildings and in their private cars,” the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday (4).
The ministry reiterated South Africa’s call for an “immediate ceasefire”.
Meanwhile, Chad recalled the country’s chargé d’affaires to Israel on Saturday in reaction to the conflict in Gaza, according to a social media post from the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The decision to withdraw the senior diplomat for consultations was taken in “outrage” at the ongoing conflict, the Chadian Presidency said on Monday.
“Chad condemns the loss of human life of many innocent civilians and calls for a ceasefire that leads to a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue,” said a government spokesperson.
