South Africa: At least 10 dead, hundreds homeless by floods

At least 10 people have been killed in floods in the east coastal city of East London, while hundreds more have been left homeless since the weekend, state media reported, as rivers overflowed and roads were flooded with mud torrents.

Footage broadcast by the state-run SABC television network shows cars attempting to cross flooded boulevards. South African media have reported that hundreds of homes were swept away by torrents on the outskirts of East London, particularly in the town of Mdanchane.

Scientists suspect that climate change is responsible for the worsening of floods and drought in the east coast of South Africa.
