South Africa is elected to the UN Human Rights Council; Venezuela loses seat

The UN General Assembly elected this Tuesday (11) Africa of SouthAlgeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Morocco, Romania and Vietnam to the Human Rights Council for a three-year term from 1 January 2023.

Germany and Sudan also won a secondof tenure at the Geneva-based body, but Korea of South and Venezuela were not reelected. The 47-member council cannot make legally binding decisions, but its decisions carry political weight and can authorize inquiries.

“It’s a mixed picture. Korea’s departure is a very negative surprise, but liberal democracies will be relieved by Venezuela’s departure,” said Olaf Wientzek, director of Geneva office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany.

Candidates are elected in geographic groups. There were two competitive matches this Tuesday — between Thisofs from Asia-Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean — to elect 14 members. Members cannot fulfill more than ofis consecutive terms.
