South Africa: Parliament fire under partial control – Flames battle continues

LAST UPDATE: 15:15

A fire in the South African parliament caused extensive damage on Sunday, with firefighters partially reducing the blaze after several hours. It should be noted that according to Reuters, the roof collapsed, while there was extensive damage to an entire floor.

In the morning, the smoke had begun to recede as it rose from one of the many buildings that make up the parliament complex in Cape Town.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia De Lille told reporters there were no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

President Cyril Ramaphosa told reporters after assessing some of the damage that parliament’s work would continue. He added that “I believe that someone is being held at the moment and is being interrogated”, but did not give details.

“It seems that the firefighting system did not work properly, but the appearance of the firefighters saved a very important national asset of our government,” Ramaphosa said.

The parliamentary complex, part of which dates back to 1884, consists of a complex of buildings. The National Assembly, or the lower house of Parliament, is located in what is known as the New Wing.

The upper house, or National Council of Provinces (NCOP), is located in the so-called Old Wing or Old Assembly, which is also used for committee meetings.

“The fire has been contained in the Old Wing. Firefighters are currently trying to contain the blaze in New Wing, where the fire has affected the National Assembly hall,” the parliament said in a statement.
