South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday to better understand the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
“Based on our relations with the Russian Federation and as a member of the BRICS, South Africa has been approached to play a mediation role,” Ramaphosa said on his Linkedin account, adding that the country believes the conflict must be resolved through of negotiations.
According to the Kremlin, the presidents “reaffirmed their commitment to further develop the bilateral strategic partnership”, aimed at expanding trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation, as well as “joint efforts in response to Covid-19”.
They also highlighted the importance of continuing interaction within the BRICS and in other international spaces.
The Russian government confirmed talks about the war in Ukraine, which it called a “special military operation to protect the Donbas”. Ramaphosa was also briefed on the status of Putin’s talks with representatives of the Ukrainian authorities.
Also according to the Kremlin, the President of South Africa “supported the ongoing political and diplomatic efforts”, and both agreed to continue their contacts.
