South Africa: Second fire breaks out in parliament building

The new fire that broke out yesterday in the complex where the South African parliament is housed in Cape Town has been brought under control, officials announced today, while a man who was arrested yesterday and is accused of arson is going to appear in court today.

The first fire that broke out on Sunday caused the collapse of part of the roof in the New Wing of the complex, which houses the lower house of South Africa. The roof of the Old Wing, which dates back to 1884 and houses the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), has also partially collapsed.

A new fire broke out yesterday Monday.

“Around midnight the fire was brought under control,” local Cape Town officials said in a statement.

“New damage has been caused, with more floors of the building, which houses the offices of MPs and staff, being completely destroyed,” they pointed out.

Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man accused of arson and other offenses, including theft, is expected to appear in court today.

“It is believed that he managed to enter (the building) from the window of one of the offices,” South African police spokesman Hawmandaz’s spokesman Namtandazo Babo told eNCA yesterday, adding that investigations into how the suspect managed to escape security in parliament.

The fire spread to many buildings, but officials said significant parts of the complex survived, such as a museum with about 4,000 works of art and cultural heritage, some of which date back to the 17th century.
