A large fire continued to ravage South Africa’s parliament in Cape Town tonight, and police in favor of the arson case have arrested a 51-year-old man who will be brought to justice.
For many hours, firefighters have been battling the blaze, which is burning the huge Victorian building.
“A man has been arrested inside parliament, he is being questioned as part of a criminal investigation. He will be brought to justice on Tuesday,” Tandy Bambo, a spokesman for the Hawks elite’s South African special forces, told AFP.
No casualties were reported, but the plenary chamber was completely destroyed. “The room where the members are meeting has been completely burnt down,” President Moloto Motambo told AFP, adding that according to initial reports, “the fire started in the foyers in two different parts of parliament.”
“It seems that the automatic fire extinguishing system did not work as it should have,” President Cyril Ramafoza, who went to the scene, also told the press. “Parliament’s work will continue,” he told the South African leader, who was due to address the plenary in the plenary in February.
According to the authorities, the fire extinguishing system seems to have been breached and therefore did not work.
“What we discovered this morning was that someone had shut off one of the valves and therefore there was no water to run the automatic fire extinguishing system,” said Patricia de Lille, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure.
The fire started at around 5:00 am local time, in the older wing of the building, which was completed in 1884. In this historic part, the roof collapsed, “there is nothing left,” said the head of security and rescue services in Cape Town. , Jean-Pierre Smith.
In the images from a helicopter broadcast by the television networks, huge flames could be seen springing from the roof.
The total extent of the damage to the building, which houses a valuable collection of books and works of art, has not yet been clarified.
