South African Police Investigate AfriCrypt Cryptocurrency Pyramid

The South African police have received several statements from citizens who have lost funds on the AfriCrypt pyramid. Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the activities of the platform.

According to Bloomberg, a preliminary investigation has begun on the activities of the cryptocurrency pyramid in four South African provinces, as well as the cities of Johannesburg and Durban.

According to Lt. Col. Philani Nkwalase of the Hawks Police Unit, law enforcement has received statements from several affected citizens. The damage from AfriCrypt’s actions is estimated at millions of dollars.

The fact that the founders of AfriCrypt disappeared with users’ money became known at the end of June. They managed to withdraw 69,000 BTC (more than $ 3 billion at the time). A little later, brothers Amir and Raees Kajee (Amir and Raees Kajee) stated that they did not steal user assets, and the platform became a victim of hackers.

The Keiji brothers went into hiding back in April. According to their statement to The Wall Street Journal, they were prompted to do so by threats from “very, very dangerous people.” Until now, their whereabouts are unknown.

Note that Africa has become a fertile ground for cryptocurrency scammers. Recently, Johann Steynberg, the organizer of one of the most famous pyramids of Mirror Trading International, which collected 23,000 BTC, was detained by Brazilian law enforcement agencies.
