South African retailer Pick n Pay starts accepting bitcoin in supermarkets

One of the largest retail chains in South Africa is going to offer customers to pay for goods with bitcoins through any Lightning Network-enabled application.

South African online retail giant Pick n Pay wrote in an official statement that it is convenient to pay for goods in supermarkets with bitcoin:

“A transaction is as easy and secure as swiping a debit or credit card. Customers scan the QR code from the app and accept the rand conversion rate on their smartphone at the time of the transaction. The fee for each transaction is minimal, costs the client an average of 0.7 rand (about $0.04) and takes less than 30 seconds.”

The retailer has tested the Bitcoin payment method in ten Western Cape stores over the past five months and, satisfied with the results of the test, has decided to launch BTC payments in all of its stores. In the coming months, Pick n Pay plans to introduce a new payment method in 1,628 outlets.

With the growth in the level of acceptance of cryptocurrencies, more and more retail chains and stores from various market segments are switching to paying for goods and services with digital assets. In October, fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s in the Swiss city of Lugano began accepting bitcoin and Tether (USDT) as payment. In September, the largest telecommunications company in Spain, Telefonica, entered into an agreement with the local Bit2Me exchange, under which payments in cryptocurrencies will soon be available on the Tu.com marketplace. Fashion house Gucci added support for cryptocurrency payments in US stores in May.
