The Korea Office of Disease Control and Prevention (KCDA) announced today that 118,504 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight Monday and 130 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.
The pandemic death toll rose to 21,354 out of a total of 16,471,940 infections, according to the KCDA. The mortality rate remained unchanged at 0.13%.
Cases increased compared to 47,743 the previous year but decreased from 210,732 last Tuesday. The spread of the virus has been declining since March 17, when a record 620,000 or more infections were recorded, the peak of the wave being attributed to the most contagious Omicron variant and in particular to the BA subtype.
The number of patients with COVID-19 in hospitals in critical condition, a key indicator, decreased to 834 (-16 in 24 hours).
86.8% of South Korea’s population of 52 million have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while 64.3% have received booster doses.
