South Korea: 16,584 coronavirus cases, 40 deaths due to COVID-19 in 24 hours

The Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KCDA) announced that 16,584 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight on Thursday and 40 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

The death toll from a new coronavirus pandemic in South Korea has risen to 24,103, with a total of 18,053,287 infections. The mortality rate remained unchanged at 0.13%.

The cases decreased from 18,816 last Friday and 25,120 last Friday. The spread of the virus has been slowing since March, when a record 620,000 infections were recorded, the peak of the wave due to the more infectious Omicron variant, in particular the BA.2 subtype.

The number of patients with COVID-19 in hospitals in critical condition, a key indicator, decreased to 207 (-49 in 24 hours).

86.9% of the population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while 64.9% have received booster doses, according to official data.
