South Korea: Coronavirus outbreaks exceed 12 million

The Korea Office of Disease Control and Prevention (KCDA) announced today that 187,213 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight Sunday and 287 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

The death toll from a new coronavirus pandemic in South Korea has risen to 15,186 with a total of 12,162,232 infections, according to the KCDA. The mortality rate remained unchanged at 0.13%.

The number of cases fell compared to the previous one, when 318,130 were confirmed, partly due to the fact that fewer tests were performed at the weekend.

Authorities had warned that the current pandemic wave, attributed to the more contagious Omicron variant, would peak in March.

The number of patients with COVID-19 who are hospitalized in a serious to critical condition, key indicator, increased to 1,273 (+57 in 24 hours).

86.7% of South Korea’s 52 million people have been fully vaccinated; 63.6% have received a booster dose, according to official figures.
