South Korea: First deaths attributed to the Omicron variant

Two patients who died from complications of COVID-19 at a hospital in Guangzhou (south) have been post-mortem verified to be infected with the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus, South Korea’s national news agency Yonhap reported today, citing local authorities.

They were two people over the age of 90, Jonap added, explaining that their deaths are still being investigated. If confirmed to be due to the highly contagious variant of this SARS-CoV-2, it will be the first deaths in the country.

To date, 1,318 Omicron cases have been confirmed.

Earlier, it was announced that 3,129 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed yesterday Sunday until midnight and 36 patients succumbed to complications of COVID-19. The pandemic count of the new coronavirus in the country of Southeast Asia thus reached 5,730 deaths out of a total of 642,207 infections, according to data from the Korea’s Disease Control and Prevention Service (KDCA). The mortality rate remained unchanged at 0.89%.

As of February 26, 2021, 86.2% of the population of 52 million have received the first dose of vaccine, 83% have been fully vaccinated, and 36% have received a booster dose, always according to KDCA data.
