A South Korean police officialagainst whom an investigation was being conducted for the very dead tread on his day of celebration Halloween at SeoulFound dead in his house.

From accident on October 29 killed 156 people and injured 198 -mostly in their 20s and 30s- when a large crowd fled to the narrow streets of Seoul’s popular nightlife district of Itewon, where they had gone for this year’s Halloween parties, the first to be celebrated in the country without almost any restrictive measures due to COVID-19 in three years.

THE officialwho was released only by his last name, Jeong, was the head of the intelligence division at the Yongsan Police Station that also houses Itewon and was found dead at his home in Seoul by a family member at around 12:45 p.m., he said. Yonhap cited unnamed police officials.

The 55-year-old Jeong, as reported by APE-MPE, he was accused of deleting intelligence department reports warning of a serious accident after opening an investigation into the police’s handling of the accident.

MPs criticized the alleged deletion of the documents during a session of parliament on Monday and called for the arrest and punishment of those responsible.

National Police Commissioner Yoon Hee-keun told lawmakers that the head of the intelligence division at the Yongsan police station had requested the records be deleted and that he would be investigated.

The police, as APE-MPE notes, have accepted harsh criticism of its response during the tragedy as he sent only 137 police officers to the area even though he had estimated from the beginning that up to 100,000 people would gather at the scene of the accident.

Last week it was revealed that a number of emergency calls, made before the crash, had warned the public about the possible trampling and called for the authorities to intervene immediately.
