South Korea: Impeachment motion filed against President Yoon after martial law fiasco

A motion of impeachment against President Yoon was tabled in South Korea’s parliament today, paving the way for a vote that could lead to the ouster of the head of state over his failed attempt to declare martial law. The vote on the motion of censure should take place within the next 72 hours. The ruling People’s Power Party has announced it will vote against the proposal. The opposition Democratic Party will need at least eight votes from ruling party MPs to approve the censure motion. If the impeachment motion is approved and subsequently upheld by the Constitutional Court, Yoon Seok-geil will become the second South Korean president to be ousted since Park Geun-hye in 2017. If Yoon is ousted, the prime minister will temporarily take over as president. Han Dak-soo and elections will be held within 60 days. Source: RES
