South Korea: Increases vaccine purchases from Moderna

Her Ministry of Health South Korea announced on Sunday that Modern Inc. will supply the country with 7.01 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by the first week of September, following a government request to speed up deliveries.

About 1.01 million doses are expected to arrive in the country on Monday, according to the South Korean Ministry of Health, while another 6 million will be delivered gradually.

Moderna delivered 1.3 million doses of its vaccine to South Korea earlier this month, while also informing it that it could deliver less than half of the 8.5 million doses it was scheduled to ship in August.

“In response to our request to accelerate and expand the supply of vaccines, Moderna has informed us that it will provide 7.01 million doses by the first week of September,” the South Korean Ministry of Health said in a statement.

According to South Korea’s plans, the country will have vaccinated at least one dose of 36 million people before the three-day festive day for Chuseok, which is September 20-22.

South Korea’s health ministry, meanwhile, said the government was in talks with Romania over a vaccine swap deal, but denied local media reports that the Romanian government had approved the donation of 450,000 doses of Moderna vaccines.

On Saturday, South Korea announced 1,628 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 236,366. A total of 2,215 people have died in the country so far.

By midnight on Saturday, 50.4% of the country’s 52 million people had received at least one dose of the vaccine, while only 22.5% had completed the vaccination, according to government figures.

The country’s goal, however, remains to vaccinate more than 70% of its population by September.
