South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung said on Wednesday that President Yoon Suk Yeol poses a high risk of provoking North Korea into a military conflict and has a chance significant of him declaring martial law again.
Hundreds of opposition deputies and party members gathered in front of the National Assembly this Wednesday to call for President Yoon’s resignation and impeachment.
“They will try (martial law) again, addressing its shortcomings after having failed once,” Lee said. “The risk of provoking North Korea and eventually leading to military conflict is significantly high,” he added.
Yoon declared martial law in a live television speech on Tuesday night (4). He reversed the measure six hours later after parliament challenged police and special forces to vote to block the law.
Six South Korean opposition parties have introduced a bill calling for Yoon’s impeachment, Seoul’s Yonhap News Agency reported.
A vote on the bill could be held this Friday (6) or Saturday (7), Yonhap added.
