South Korea: President Yun Suk-gil’s message for greater cooperation with China and Japan

Proposal for one tripartite dialogue mechanism South Korea, China and Japan, including a summit of leaders to discuss issues such as security and climate change, the former’s president, Yoon Suk-gil, said.

At the meeting of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with the participation also of China, Japan and South Korea, Yun called for stronger, joint efforts to overcome complex future crisessuch as those resulting from war and rights abuses, as well as the food and energy risks posed by climate change.

Yun also stated that North Korea’s provocations and efforts to enhance its nuclear and missile capabilities pose a serious threat to the international community.

He emphasized that if North Korea launches another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and conducts its seventh nuclear test, the international community should respond with one voicethe South Korean presidency said in a statement.

At the same time, South Korea should seek economic support for North Korea if it decides to denuclearize.

ASEAN leaders have expressed concern over North Korea’s nuclear program, calling on Pyongyang to stop threatening regional peace and respond to denuclearization talks, the South Korean president’s office said.

Yun is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida tomorrow in Phnom Penh, on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, as Yonhap news agency reported, citing the South Korean presidency. He is also expected to have a meeting with US President Joe Biden as well as a trilateral summit with Biden and Kishida tomorrow.
