Prosecutors in South Korea formally charged the country’s ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol today with inciting rebellion in connection with the failed imposition of martial law on December 3, Yonhap news agency reported. The decision comes after anti-corruption investigators recommended last week that Yun be formally charged. Yun’s lawyers had appealed to prosecutors to immediately release him from what they described as illegal detention. According to the criminal investigation, Yun has been in custody since becoming the first sitting president to be arrested on January 15. Sedition is one of the few charges for which a president in South Korea does not have immunity. It is punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty, although executions have been carried out in South Korea for decades. Source: RES
