South Korea reports new record of critically ill Covid-19 patients

South Korea has reported a new record of critically ill Covid-19 patients, according to data from the Korean Disease Control Agency (KDCA) released on Tuesday (21).

In all, 1,063 patients with Covid-19 were in critical condition, 84% of them aged 60 years and older, the KDCA said.

Health Minister Kwon Deok-chul said the government will add 6,944 hospital beds for patients with Covid-19 in a moderate and critical condition by the end of January 2022.

Other measures to ease the burden on the country’s difficult health facilities, according to Kwon, include:

National university hospitals are already providing 308 beds for critically ill Covid-19 patients. Some public hospitals will be converted to treat only Covid-19 patients in January.

Space will also be added in hospitals for Covid-19 patients who need special care, such as dialysis, pregnancy and mental health.

More public medical workers, including military doctors, will be allocated to treat Covid-19 patients and the government will prepare the national health care system to serve 10,000 patients a day, with the worst-case scenario in mind.

The announcement is in line with the orders of President Moon Jae-in, made on Monday (20), to expand the medical response capacity, ensuring more hospital beds and medical professionals.

South Korea recorded 7,456 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the country’s total to 583,065, according to the KDCA. The death toll rose to 4,906, after 78 deaths were added on Tuesday.
