South Korea seeks cooperation from China, Russia against North Korea tests

South Korea called on Monday for “active cooperation” from China and Russia to prevent North Korea from conducting new missile tests, hours before a UN Security Council meeting on the test launch of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile.

South Korea’s nuclear envoy Kim Gunn spoke to the Chinese and Russian ambassadors in Seoul, the foreign ministry said in a statement, and urged them to help hold North Korea accountable for its “provocations”.

The Security Council meeting was scheduled at the request of the United States after North Korea last week launched a missile capable of reaching the American continent.

“Kim urged active cooperation from China and Russia, permanent members of the Security Council, and for them to play constructive roles in preventing North Korea from further provocations and returning it to dialogue,” the ministry said.

North Korea has carried out an unprecedented number of ballistic missile launches this year and Washington has warned for months that it could carry out a nuclear bomb test, its first since 2017, at any time.

US President Joe Biden met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last week and said Beijing had an obligation to try to convince North Korea not to resume nuclear tests.

A senior US administration official said earlier this month that Washington believes China and Russia have the leverage to persuade North Korea not to resume nuclear bomb tests.
