South Korea: Two suspected of spying for Pyongyang

Two South Koreans, including an officer, have been arrested and charged with stealing military secrets in order to hand them over to North Korea for a fee in cryptocurrencies, Seoul police said today.

One of the alleged spies is a 29-year-old captain. He allegedly sent information to a North Korean agent that allowed him to gain access to an internal communications network of the South Korean armed forces.

The second, a 38-year-old businessman, is the head of a digital portfolio management company. He allegedly gave the first suspect, at the request of the Pyongyang agent, a bracelet equipped with a secret camera, so that he could gather information more easily.

He also allegedly created a “poison tap”, a USB device with software that allows computers to be hacked quickly to gain access to the South Korean military’s communications system.

“The two men were arrested on charges of violating national security law,” a South Korean police official told AFP.

According to Seoul authorities, the businessman has been in contact with the North Korean agent for six years, in a digital community dedicated to cryptocurrencies. The three suspects were communicating via the Telegram platform.

The businessman allegedly received about $ 600,000 in cryptocurrencies and the officer about $ 38,000 from the Pyongyang agent, according to police.
