South Korean currency tumbles against dollar after martial law declared

South Korea’s won currency fell sharply against the dollar after South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol declared martial law, which was immediately revoked by the National Assembly. Around 21:00 (Greece time), the won was down 1.55% against the dollar, at 1,428.09 won per dollar. Yeol explained that his decision was aimed at “protecting” the country from “North Korean communist forces and exterminating elements hostile to the state.” However, the ruling party, from which he comes, urged him to lift martial law after his decree was annulled by parliament, according to Yonhap news agency. The president’s target was the opposition and especially the Democratic Party (DPK) which has a majority in the National Assembly.
