South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun took responsibility for ordering soldiers to declare Martial Law. Kim resigned after President Yoon Suk Yeol tried to implement the measure.
In a statement released this Wednesday (4), he assumed responsibility for mobilizing the military.
“All soldiers who performed their duties in relation to the Martial Law emergency were under the orders of the minister, and all responsibilities lie within me,” Kim said in a text message sent to the press.
In the same text, he highlighted that he is sorry for “causing concern and confusion to the people” in relation to Martial Law.
“Martial Law has been lifted and people are resuming their daily lives, but the local political and security situations are not calm,” Kim warned.
He also promised that the ministry will take this situation “very strictly” and “stablely manage” the outstanding issues.
President Yoon has not spoken publicly since declaring Martial Law, but when he backtracked on the move, he reiterated his criticism of the opposition party, saying in a statement that it was frustrating his government’s actions.
