South Korea’s deposed president, Yoon Suk Yeol, apologized on Friday (4) for not meeting the expectations of “beloved citizens” after the country’s constitutional court confirmed the impeachment of parliament on its imposition of marchial law last year.
“I am deeply grateful to all of you who supported me and encouraged me, despite my shortcomings,” Yoon wrote in a written message released by his lawyers. “I’m sorry and I’m sorry I didn’t meet your expectations,” he added.
The court rejected most of Yoon’s arguments that he declared martial law to sound the alarm about the abuse of the parliamentary majority by the main opposition party, claiming that there are legal ways to deal with disagreements.
The unanimous decision ends months of political turmoil that overshadowed their efforts to deal with US President Donald Trump’s new administration at a time of slow growth in Asia’s fourth largest economy.
