South Korean PM says he will “serve until the end” if president falls

South Korea’s Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has vowed to serve the people “until the end” following a series of resignations and growing calls for the country’s president to step down.

“As prime minister, who oversees the cabinet, I take full responsibility for all events that have led to this moment,” Han said in a statement Wednesday titled “A Message to the People.”

“I will work with the Cabinet members until the end to serve the people,” he said. “From this moment on, the Cabinet must fulfill its duties to ensure that the stability of the nation and the daily lives of the people remain unchanged.”

Six opposition parties are calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment following widespread backlash across the political spectrum, including within his own party, against the short-lived martial law decree.

What happens afterwards?

A bill calling for Yoon’s impeachment was submitted to the National Assembly, the country’s legislature, with a vote scheduled for Friday (6) or Saturday (7), according to Yonhap News Agency.

If approved, it will go to the Constitutional Court, where at least six judges must agree to maintain impeachment.

According to the South Korean constitution, the president must be suspended from exercising power during the judicial process until the impeachment is judged.

The Prime Minister takes over as interim leader.

Yoon’s chief of staff, and more than 10 of the president’s senior secretaries, have submitted calls to resign.
