South Korean President Yoon declares martial law in the country

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an unannounced speech broadcast live on YTN television.

Yoon said he had no choice but to resort to such a measure in order to safeguard the free and constitutional order, saying opposition parties had taken the parliamentary process hostage to throw the country into a crisis.

“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable North Korean anti-state forces who are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order, Yoon said.

He did not say in the speech what specific measures would be taken.

Yoon cited a motion this week from the Democratic Party, which has the majority in parliament, which aimed to launch impeachment against South Korea’s top prosecutors. The party also rejected a government budget proposal.
