South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol left the detention center in Seoul on Saturday (8) after prosecutors decided not to appeal a court decision to cancel the arrest warrant of leader accused of insurrection.
Yoon remains suspended from functions. Criminal and impeachment trials continue to impose a brief marriage law on December 3, 2024.
The Central District Court of Seoul canceled Yoon’s arrest warrant on Friday (7), citing the moment of his prosecution and “questions about the legality” of the investigation process.
“First, I would like to thank the Central District Court for their courage and determination to correct the illegality,” Yoon said in a statement.
His lawyers said the court ruling “confirmed that the president’s arrest was problematic in both procedural and substantive aspects,” calling the decision “beginning of a journey to restore the rule of law.”
Prosecutors could not be contacted immediately to comment.
At Yoon’s impeachment trial, the Constitutional Court must decide in the coming days if it reintegrates or removes it from office.
Yoon, the first South Korean president to be arrested while in office, has been in custody since January 15.
On Saturday, about 38,000 Yoon supporters gathered in Seoul, while 1,500 people spoke out against him, the Yonhap news agency said, citing police estimates.
