South Korean protesters clash with police in Seoul

Hundreds of South Korean protesters clashed with police this Thursday (12) as they demanded the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. While protesting, they attempted to break through barricades and reach the president’s official residence in the capital, Seoul.

Many of the protesters, who were members of labor unions, attacked police forces on the city’s main streets.

Protesters still managed to get past hundreds of police officers and occupied a main road near Yoon’s official residence, causing surrounding traffic to come to a halt.

One of the people who participated in the protests, Kwak Kyoung-sun, said the actions were a response to Yoon’s speech on Thursday (11), in which he promised to “keep fighting” and confront political opponents.

Investigation against president

Meanwhile, authorities continue investigations into the president’s attempted martial law decree last week.

The president is expected to face a second impeachment vote in parliament this Saturday (14), a week after the first attempt failed after the majority of the ruling party voted against it.
